Revolutionzing Songwriting Pedagogy: The Maimuang Band’s Influence on Contemporary Lanna Music Education for International Music Students

This study investigates three primary objectives: (1) Exploring the innovative
creative process behind contemporary Lanna music, as exemplified by the
Maimuang Band (2) Developing and implementing pioneering teaching methods
tailored for contemporary Lanna music composition, using the Maimuang Band
as a guiding model, for international music students at Pibulsongkram Rajabhat
University and (3) Evaluating learning outcomes resulting from these innovative
teaching strategies. Data were gathered from two Maimuang Band members and
26 undergraduate students in the third and fourth year majoring in International
Music Department during the first semester of the 2022 academic year. Research
methods included interviews, questionnaires, content analysis, frequency analysis,
and t tests. Findings reveal that innovative creative teaching management process
behind contemporary Lanna music by the Maimuang Band relies on applying
contemporary literary principles, which include identifying the creative process
in Maimuang Band’s music composition, consisting of understanding historical
context, mastering contemporary Lanna music techniques, and incorporating
modern music composition principles. Innovative pedagogy encompasses
three components and six specialized learning units aligned with contemporary
composition principles. The use of these methods significantly improved student
learning outcomes (M= 50.42, SD = 3.48), surpassing the 80 percent benchmark,
with statistical significance at the .001 level. Learner attitudes transformed from
a pre-course mean of 63.40 (SD = 0.49) to 90.60 (SD = 0.23), demonstrating
statistical significance at the .001 level. This research contributes to music education
by offering a transformative approach to contemporary Lanna music composition
instruction for international music students at Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University.
