A Comparison of Reading Ability and Reading Attitude towards English Reading of Mathayomsuksa2 Students Using the CIRC Technique and Traditional Teaching

Abstract

This research aimed tocompare 1)Mathayomsuksa 2 students’ English reading ability before and after using the CIRC technique (CIRC); 2) the students’ English reading ability before and after using traditional teaching; 3) the students’ English reading ability using the CIRC and traditional teaching; 4) the students’ attitude towards learning English using the CIRC technique and traditional teaching. The sample, selected by simple random sampling, included a classroom of 50students fromChainatPittayakhom, Chai Nat Province, during the academic year 2016.  The students were randomly assigned to 2 groups of 25 students each, one randomly assigned to the implementation of CIRC and the other traditional teaching.  The research instruments were 1) lesson plansusingCIRC, 2) lesson plans using traditional teaching, 3) a test on reading ability with a reliability of 0.842,and 4) a questionnaire on attitude towards learning English with a reliability of 0.890. Data were analyzed in terms of mean, standard deviation, and t-test. Findings indicated that 1) the students’ English reading ability after using CIRC was significantly higher than that before using it (p<.05); 2)  the  students’ English reading ability after using traditional teaching was significantly higher than that before using it (p<.05); 3) the students’ English reading ability using CIRC was significantly higher than that of the students using traditional teaching (p<.05); and 4) the students’ attitude towards learning English using CIRC was significantly higher than that of the students using traditional teaching (p<.05).
