Creation of a Learning Center to Prepare Inmates at Lampang Correctional Institution for Drug Addicts to a Suitable Career

Abstract

The research titled “Creation of a Learning Center to prepare Inmates at Lampang Correctional Institution for Drug Addicts to a Suitable Career” aims 1) to review the results of the establishment of a participatory learning center of Lampang Correctional Institution from the past to the present. 2) to create a learning center for prepare inmates for suitable occupations. 3) to assess the occupational confidence of prisoners based on the learning centers earnings; which is research participatory workshop. The target groups were 30 inmates, and 6 prison officials. The tools used were observation forms, interview forms, questionnaires and staging. The research results according to the objectives found that

            1) A review of the results of the establishment of a learning center to prepare inmates for suitable occupations. Policy/ rules of the penitentiary emphasize on behavior development of inmates from admission to preparation before release. There is a policy of vocational skill training and inmates training in various courses by collaborating with organization, agencies and network partners, both public and private in the area to provide vocational skills training for inmates. In the design of the learning center, it has the advantages of being a tourist attraction and the ability to support tourists in the future.

            2) The guidelines for building a learning center to prepare inmates for suitable occupations consist of a five-step process: Step 1: Survey the needs from those involved, step 2: Data analysis. The needs of the form of knowledge transfer through the learning center. Step 3 study visit to learn more about the learning center by taking tour of the model learning center. Step 4: Designing a learning center with 12 activities bases and step 5: Adding skills/adding knowledge in 3 main points; 1) participation in activities of the learning center 2) adding knowledge to enhance skills for behavior modification of inmates and 3) networking and publicizing the learning center.

            3) The results of the assessment of the prisoner’s occupational confidence based on the income of the learning centers on 3 sides; pets, crop production and beverage and snack centers. The results in all were satisfactory.
