Patterns of Prostitution in Mueang Surat Thani District

Abstract

This article aims to present formats of prostitution  occurred in Mueang Suratthani District directly and indirectly in various types of entertainment spots  as well as to study on conditions of contacting and prostitution made by and between customers and  prostitutes.

            The results revealed that there were 2 formats of prostitution including: 1) direct prostitution; and 2) hidden prostitution occurred in 5 places including: 1) Open brothels – it was found that some services of prostitution were provided in houses or hotels rented by prostitutes; 2) Thai massage shops – These massage shops were opened as Thai traditional massage shops but they were hidden with prostitution; 3) Karaoke bar – Some karaoke bars were hidden with prostitution; 4) Sideline – They were prostitutes using Line application as the tool for communicating with customers; and 5) Restaurants – Most prostitutes worked as receptionists or waitresses in this kind of restaurants.

            Although prostitution is currently considered as a kind of occupation that is accepted by Thai government and society, this occupation has been rooted in Thai history for long period. As a result, the concept on eliminating prostitution from Thai society by using laws as the toll may be difficult to be achieved. Consequently, the author would like to propose personal idea that this occupation should be certified by the government for benefits of supervision as well as safety of both customers and prostitutes. In addition, there should be additional measures on intensive inspection and control in order to protect women below 18 years old from the circle of prostitution.
