Concepts and Verification of Truth: Perspectives in Logic, Science, and Buddhism

Abstract

This academic article aims to examine three perspectives on the concepts of truth and truth verification: logic, science, and Buddhism. The objective is to analyze the the rationality of these concepts as tools for seeking and verifying truth in these disciplines in a rational manner.

The findings indicate that: (1) The logical concept defines truth as comprising three essential elements: it must be true, we believe it to be true, and there must be evidence to support its truth. This Truth verification uses three theories: The theory of implied association holds that something is true only if it is conceptually logical. The theory of congruence holds that something is true only if it is supported by evidence. And the theory of pragmatism holds that something is true only if it can be practically applied. (2) The scientific concept characterizes truth as abstract, public, and subject to verification and testing. The components of scientific truth include facts, concepts, principles, hypotheses, laws, and theories. (3) The Buddhist concept classifies truth into two levels: conventional truth and ultimate truth.

The author suggests that a comprehensive search for and verification of truth must encompass all three concepts. If one focuses solely on logic or science, this may be likened to prioritizing intellect and the physical body while neglecting the spiritual aspect; life will be incomplete. Similarly, if one focuses solely on religion, this may be likened to prioritizing the spiritual aspect while neglecting the physical; life will also be incomplete. nevertheless, if one prioritizes all aspects together, it will help create a more complete and fulfilling life.
