AN ANALYSIS OF THAI CLASSICAL SONG

Abstract

This article focuses on the principle of traditional Thai vocalization analysis. The author has collected data from Thai classical song documentation, interviews with Thai classical venerable singers, and personal experience. The study of Thai vocalization can be summarized and categorized into 11 considerable topics: 1) Aspects of Notation for Thai vocal 2) Penta-Centric modal system 3) Musical Form 4) Rhythmic organization 5) Song text analysis 6) Musical phrasing treatments 7) Lyric arrangement 8) Composing a vocal contour 9) Coloratura and Ornamentations 10) Breathing techniques 11) Mode of singing. All topics are theoretically clarified and explained with clear knowledge dissemination and further study examples.
