A Survey of Teaching and Learning of Chinese Volunteer Teacher in Secondary Schools in ChiangRai, Thailand

Abstract

   The main objective of this research was to assess a teaching and learning of Chinese volunteer teachers in secondary schools in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. The research result was used effectively as information for introducing problems and suggestions for problems solving in of the teaching and learning of Chinese volunteer teachers. The sample of this study were nine Chinese volunteer teachers, seven teachers and 337 students of seven secondary schools in Chiang Rai that were nominated by the Chiang Rai Chinese Center. The research instrument was a questionnaire.
   The research results found that in 2015, 55.56 percent of Chinese volunteer teachers thought Chinese language and culture, 44.64 percent of Chinese volunteer teachers were able to adjust themselves to the environment and their colleague. The statistics were as follows: 1) the contents of teaching and learning contained with various cultural and traditional at good level as 57 percent; 2) communication with students in Chinese language was good level as 43 percent; and 3) students were often late and non-cooperative as 55.66 percent. The aspect of students about studying Chinese language with Chinese volunteer teacher; the result research found that Chinese was a required subject for most of students in secondary school in Chiang Rai. The percentage was 79.04 percent. Moreover, 58.45 percent preferred to study with Chinese volunteer teachers. However, there were some problems about teaching Chinese language of Chinese volunteer teachers such as pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, Chinese alphabets and also culture. The serious problems were Chinese grammar and pronunciation teaching with 55.56 percent and 44.44 percent respectively.
