An Analysis of SARS News Reports in China Daily

Abstract
The purposes of this study were 1) to analyze the patterns of news about SARS of news reports on China for Chinese and news reports on China for foreign audience; and 2) to find out the differences or similarity in news reports on China for Chinese and news reports on China for foreign audience. Forty SARS news were analyzed. The news consisted of 20 SARS reported news for Chinese and 20 SARS reported news for foreigners from China Daily, in order to find their move patterns and differences or similarity, using the framework proposed by Bhatia (1993).
The first result revealed that moves of SARS news reports from China Daily for Chinese, consisted of five moves as follows. Move 1- Setting of veritable SARS case. Move 2-Arguing the SARS case referring to the title. Move 3- Referring the matters of SARS case. Move 4- Reporting the epidemic data in China, consisting of internal steps which were: Step 1-Giving the death numbers of SARS, Step 2-Describing the human’s terror and strangeness for SARS, and Step 3-Introducing the victory against SARS. Move 5-Recommending the action for SARS, with two internal steps: Step 1-The stochastic sources of SARS, and Step 2-The prevention, controlling and treatment for SARS.
Moves of SARS news reports from China Daily for foreign audience, consisted of five moves as follows. Move 1-Setting of SARS case; Move 2- Arguing the SARS case referring to the title. Move 3-Reflecting the matters of SARS case. Move 4-Reporting the epidemic data in China, with the internal steps included Step 1-Introducing the positive SARS controlling in China, Step 2-The stochastic sources of SARS in China, Step 3- Describing the safety of staying in China. Move 5-Recommending the action SARS for preventing of SARS.
The second result revealed that move structures of the two kinds of news were the same but their steps were different. Thus, the news reports on SARS were differently reported to the targeted audience. For the Chinese audience, it was given a lot of terrible news like death numbers, human’s terror and strangeness. For the foreign audience, it was focused on how the SARS had controlled the source of SARS or the safety in china.
