SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND REGIONAL REVITALIZATION: A CASE STUDY OF TOWNS IN HOKKAIDO PREFECTURE, JAPAN
Keywords:
Local, Sustainable Development Goals, CitizenAbstract
This study examines the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and regional revitalization initiatives in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. It aims to investigate the SDGs Future City projects, the strategies for regional revitalization that collectively affect the role of local governments.
The analysis results are based on participatory observation and document research. The findings show that local governments, Japanese organizations operating at the international level, and scholars focus on regional revitalization issues rather than becoming an SDGs Future City, and that driving regional revitalization has been prioritized alongside the SDGs.
In driving regional revitalization, the local government of Shimokawa has placed primary importance on the forestry industry, while the city of Sapporo has emphasized the tourism industry
