Abstract

This research aims to (1) study the online media exposure behavior of film students, (2) study the factors that motivate film students to learn short filmmaking through online media, (3) study the learning approach to short filmmaking through online media of film students, and (4) study the problems, solutions, and needs of using online media for learning to make short films in film students. This was a mixed-methods research using group interviews with 69 students, selected through purposive sampling and questionnaires distributed to 120 students selected through simple random sampling both drawn from film and digital media students from the Faculty of Communication Arts, Kasem Bundit University.

The research results found that most students preferred using YouTube, followed by Google Search Engine and websites for searching and learning about film. TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram were the platforms used most frequently, either daily or several times a week. The important factors affecting learning were personal interest, curiosity, and students' information-seeking skills, as well as factors arising from the features and content of online media that constantly present novel content, inspiring them and providing new ideas for creating their own short films. As for learning approach, they included: The process involved Task Definition, Information Seeking Strategies, Location and Access, Information Use, Synthesis and Evaluation of the reliability and appropriateness of the information before use. Problems included unstable equipment/internet access, difficulties using English or foreign language content and issues with the reliability of information containing both facts and opinions. Regarding policy implications, higher education institutions ought to promote self-learning to cultivate lifelong learning habits among learners, emphasizing creative and critical online media literacy.
