This research article aims to study the body of knowledge on Chinese-Thai and Thai-Chinese interpreting as presented in China’s CNKI database and to analyze future trends in Chinese-Thai and Thai-Chinese interpreting research. This documentary research examined 29 articles and research works collected in the CNKI database from 2000 to 2025. The analysis was divided into four main aspects: 1) year of publication, 2) type of research and researchers’ institutional affiliations, 3) research titles and main research issues, and 4) research methods.
The results revealed that, in terms of year of publication, research on Chinese-Thai and Thai-Chinese interpreting has shown a clear upward trend since 2015. In terms of research type and researchers’ institutional affiliations, of the 29 studies, 10 were master’s theses and 19 were research articles, while no doctoral dissertations were found. As for institutional affiliations, universities in southwestern China have played a particularly important role in producing research on Chinese-Thai and Thai-Chinese interpreting. In terms of research titles and main research issues, titles related to education were the most numerous (16 studies), followed by those related to economy, trade, and international cooperation (6 studies), language (3 studies), and tourism (2 studies), while titles related to agriculture and sustainable living accounted for only 1 study each. The most common main research issue was “interpreting teaching and training” (17 studies, 59%), followed by “interpreting techniques and strategies” (8 studies, 28%), “handling linguistic problems in interpreting” (2 studies, 7%), and “cognitive load management in interpreting” (2 studies, 7%). In terms of research methods, the most frequently used was the “experience summary method” (13 studies), followed by the “observation method” (8 studies). The “experimental method” and the “survey method” were each used in 3 studies, while the “theoretical analysis method” was the least used, appearing in only 2 studies.
