THE DEVELOPMENT OF EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS CAPACITY OF STUDENTS BY USING ACTIVITY - BASED LEARNING: A CASE OF MAE LAO WITTAYAKOM SCHOOL, CHIANG RAI PROVINCE

Abstract

          The objectives of this research article were: 1) to compare students’ earthquake preparedness knowledge after learning with 80% of criteria 2) to compare students’ earthquake survival skills after learning with 70% of criteria 3) to study students’ earthquake awareness after learning by using activity - based learning. This is experimental research. The sample consisted of 35 Mathayomsuksa 1/2 Maelaowittayakom Chiangrai Province students, selected by cluster random sampling. The researchers with teachers were designed the activities based on an activity - based learning approach before implementing with the sample. The research instruments included earthquake learning activity lesson plans, knowledge tests, earthquake survival skills assessment, and semi - structured interviews. The research was conducted for 12 hours. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation t - test, and content analysis. The research results revealed that: 1) Students’ earthquake preparedness knowledge after learning with activity - based learning activities was 85.39%, higher than 80 percent which was criterion score, with statistical significance at the level of .05. 2) Students’ earthquake survival skills after learning with the activity - based learning management was 76.83%, higher than 70 percent which was a criterion score, with statistical significance at the level of .05. 3) Students realize how to prepare for earthquakes, the benefits of earthquake learning activities, they have team skills, and leadership, confident about helping themselves and their families survive the earthquake and there is a need for the schools to organize activities to educate parents and the entire communities.
