Abstract

The objectives of this research article were to compare students’ listening skills before and after using movies for their learning activities, 2) to compare students’ speaking skills before and after using movies for their learning activities, and to investigate students’ satisfaction with movie-based learning activities. The subjects were 46 third-year English-majored students selected by using stratified random sampling. This experimental research using “One Group Pretest Posttest Design” was performed outside the classroom for 5 times which lasted 2 hours each excluding the pretest prior to the learning activities during which 5 different movies; Open Season 3, Wonder, The Proposal, The Blind Side and The Avenger: Endgame, based on the student interest survey, were played for 8 - 11 minutes each. The instruments used in this study consisted of 1) learning activity plans for listening and speaking skills, 2) listening test, 3) speaking test, and 4) a student satisfaction questionnaire on movie-based learning activities. The statistical analysis comprised t-test for Dependent Samples, mean scores, and standard deviation. The results of this study indicated that: 1) the students achieved higher overall listening post-test scores from individual movies than the pretest’s with a statistical significance at the .01 level 2) the students achieved higher overall speaking post-test scores than the pretest’s with a statistical significance at the .01 level. and 3) The overall student satisfaction with movie-based learning activities was found at the highest level ( gif.latex?\bar{x} = 4.83, SD = 0.10).
