DEVELOPMENT OF THE POTENTIAL FOR ADDITIONAL OCCUPATIONS OF THE ELDERLY IN SUKSAN 9 VILLAGE, NONG KHAEM DISTRICT, BANGKOK

Abstract

This study is a qualitative research project with 3 main objectives: 1) To explore the potential of the elderly in engaging in supplementary occupations in the Suksan 9Community, Nong Khaem District, Bangkok; 2) To develop this potential through appropriate activities and training; and 3) To establish supportive networks promoting occupational engagement among the elderly. A total of 25 participants were involved. Data were analyzed using content analysis, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The study aims to uncover how elderly capabilities, when supported and connected to community networks, can contribute to sustainable livelihoods and improved quality of life. The research results were found as follows: 1. The elderly in the Suksan 9 Community possess potential in four key areas: skills and experience, learning ability, social engagement and networks, and creative production. They demonstrated self-reliance and the ability to contribute as a quality labor force. With support such as knowledge development, market access, and opportunities for community participation, they can pursue sustainable livelihoods and enhance their overall quality of life. 2. The development of elderly potential through the production of Krayasart, a traditional Thai sweet, highlights both economic and cultural value. Participants showed expertise in recipes and production processes, preserved and transmitted local wisdom, and adapted to market demands. With proper support, they can generate income, preserve cultural heritage, and contribute to the local economy sustainably. 3. Establishing networks to support supplementary occupations connected the elderly with local agencies and partners. Findings emphasize the importance of skills, lifelong learning, social participation, and creative production. Properly supported networks can enhance quality of life, generate income, and strengthen the local economy in a sustainable manner. This study demonstrates that supporting and connecting the elderly’s capabilities to community resources fosters not only economic benefits but also cultural preservation and social engagement, promoting sustainable development for aging populations.
