Approaches to the Translation of Singable Songs in the Animations Tangled and Brave dubbed in Thai

Abstract
This study has been conducted to examine the relationship between the melody and the five tones of Thai language used in three songs: When Will My Life Begin (from Tangled), Mother Knows Best (from Tangled) and Touch the Sky (from Brave) . The researcher hypothesized that in lyrics translation, translators need to consider the meaning of lyrics and its given melody. Meanwhile, the original melodic movement and melodic intervals would have a substantial impact on choosing appropriate tones that fit the given melody.
The theories and principles used in this study include Christiane Nord’s Discourse Analysis, Peter Low’s Pentathlon Approach to translating song, acoustic features of Thai’ s five tones arranged by Therapan Thongkum, and Intervals arranged by Natcha Pancharoen. Thai tones are collected from each syllable in the translated lyrics. Melodic directions are collected from the movement of the tonic note to the adjacent one in a linear line (Ascending, Descending, Undulating). Melodic intervals are categorized into 1st to 8th. All data were analyzed using frequency pivot table. The researcher finalized the study by conducting an individual interview with the translator.
The study shows that melodic movement and melodic intervals are not the only factors that affect the Thai Tone choice in song translation. Translators need to consider translation unit and its Tone all at once to create a singable song with semantic equivalence. However, both melodic movement and melodic intervals have shown some impact on the usage of the five tones as follows: I.) In undulating movement, Tone 1 and Tone 3 are the most frequently used Tones. The translator tended to use the same tones first. If it proved unavailable, he opted for Tones with similar tonal features such as T4-T5-T4, T1-T4 or T2-T3 II. ) in descending movement, 2nd and 3rd intervals, all Tones can be used in translation but Tone 1 and Tone 3 are the most frequent ones. On the 4th up to the 8th interval, the most frequently used Tone is Tone 4 III. ) In descending movement, 2nd and 3rd interval, all Tones can be used in translation but Tone 1 and Tone 3 are the most frequent ones. On the 4th up to the 8th interval, Tone 2 is the most frequent one. Tone 5 doesn’t appear in descending movement with 4th -8 th interval.
