Telephone Interpreting for the Thai Tourist Police Hotline

Abstract

Telephone Interpretating (TI) makes emergency communication possible and convenient for people speaking different languages in the absence of interpreters. However, little attention has been paid to this field. No academic research has been found conducted on TI in Thailand before.The purpose of this study was to study TI in Thailand by exploring the nature of TI for the Thai Tourist Police and examining its challenges. The data were collected from interviews and a survey. Ten interpreters participated in the interview and fifteen interpreters completed the questionnaire.The results indicate that the telephone interpreters working for Thailand’s tourist police hotline undertake two responsibilities: as a liaison and as an interpreter. The telephone Interpreters in this setting overcome the absence of visual cues, generally considered as the main challenge of telephone interpretating, by familiarising themselves with frequently-occurring cases and always cross-checking the message with the users when needed.
