การวิจัยนี้นำเสนอกรอบแนวคิดที่ครอบคลุมสำหรับการประเมินการพัฒนาชุมชนอย่างยั่งยืน และพึ่งพาตนเองในประเทศไทย โดยมีพื้นฐานจากปรัชญาเของศรษฐกิจพอเพียง และทฤษฎีใหม่ในพระราชดำริ ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช รัชกาลที่ 9 โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีเชิงคุณภาพ โดยอาศัย การวิเคราะห์เอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก และการสนทนากลุ่มกับผู้มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องหลัก ได้แก่ เจ้าหน้าที่ภาครัฐ ผู้นำชุมชน ประชาชนในพื้นที่ และนักพัฒนา การสัมภาษณ์แบบกึ่งโครงสร้างดำเนินการโดยใช้การสุ่มแบบเจาะจง วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยวิธีการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา และใช้เทคนิคการตรวจสอบข้อมูลแบบสามเส้า เพื่อเสริม ความน่าเชื่อถือและความถูกต้องของผลการวิจัย
ผลจากการวิจัยคือ “รูปแบบการพัฒนาชุมชนอย่างยั่งยืนและพึ่งพาตนเองได้ตามหลักปรัชญา ของเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง” ซึ่งประกอบด้วยปัจจัยหลัก 5 ด้าน องค์ประกอบ 17 รายการ และตัวชี้วัด 45 ตัว ปัจจัยหลักทั้งห้า ได้แก่ การมีส่วนร่วมของชุมชนอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ การพัฒนาอย่างสมดุลและมีภูมิคุ้มกัน การตัดสินใจโดยใช้ข้อมูลและสารสนเทศเป็นฐาน ภาวะผู้นำที่ขับเคลื่อนด้วยความรู้และจริยธรรม และ ธรรมาภิบาลที่ดี ซึ่งเป็นพื้นฐานในการประเมินผลการดำเนินงานของชุมชนในมิติต่าง ๆ ของความยั่งยืน การวิจัยชี้ให้เห็นว่า ชุมชนที่มีภาวะผู้นำเข้มแข็ง การบริหารจัดการทรัพยากรอย่างบูรณาการ และการมีส่วนร่วมอย่างครอบคลุม มักมีระดับความยั่งยืนและการพึ่งพาตนเองสูงกว่าแบบอื่น ๆ รูปแบบ จึงเป็นเครื่องมือการพัฒนาชุมชนอย่างยั่งยืนและพึ่งพาตนเองตามหลักปรัชญาของเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง ที่มีความเป็นรูปธรรมและสอดคล้องกับบริบททางวัฒนธรรม ซึ่งสามารถนำไปใช้ในการวางแผนพัฒนา การติดตามความก้าวหน้า และการเชื่อมโยงโครงการระดับชุมชนเข้ากับเป้าหมายการพัฒนาในระดับชาติ และระดับโลกได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ
