Abstract

This study is development research aimed at improving academic achievement in mathematics specifically on the topic of “Introduction to Real Numbers” using game-based learning activities for Grade 8 students. The research objectives were to: 1) compare students’ learning achievement with a predefined criterion of 70%; 2) compare students’ learning achievement before and after the implementation of game-based learning activities; and 3) investigate students’ satisfaction with the game-based learning activities. The sample consisted of 35 Grade 8 students enrolled in the first semester, selected through simple random sampling. The research instruments included five lesson plans utilizing game-based learning, a 30-item multiple-choice test to measure learning achievement, and a 10-item questionnaire to assess student satisfaction. Basic statistical methods used in the study were mean, percentage, standard deviation, and t-test.

The research findings revealed that: 1) the post-learning learning achievement through game-based learning activities had an average score of 22.77, accounting for 75.90 percent, which was significantly higher than the 70 percent criterion at the .05 level of statistical significance; 2) the learning achievement after the learning activities was significantly higher than before the activities at the .05 level of statistical significance; and 3) students’ satisfaction with the game-based learning activities was at a high level ( = 4.04 , S.D. = 0.83).
