Reuam Trot: Performing Arts of Thai Khmer Songkran Festival in the Modern Period

Abstract

        The purpose of this research article was to study the cultural changes of Reuam Trot in the modern period. It was a qualitative research aiming to study Reuam Trot in Thai Khmer Songkran Festival of the traditional and modern styles.  The findings showed that Reuam Trot or Trutse dancing was another dramatic work in Thai Khmer Songkran Festival. It was performed as a rite and song playing during the 5th month for telling about Songkran Festival and asking for the donation for public uses.  As social conditions had changed according to various factors, this affected the changes of Reuam Trot to adjust to modern lifestyles. Also, the patterns and purposes of performance had changed, such as performing as a show in community events, performing for welcoming tourists, and using for educational purposes. During 2021, the COVID 19 pandemic crisis affected some communities, so they had adjusted the patterns of performing Reuam Trot to be modern under the customers’ culture of the new modern society which reflected the proper mix of traditional and modern cultures, including being rational to choose, improve, modify, and rebuild according to the current social conditions that are taking advantages of technology. In addition, this met the needs of the community or organizations. The modification of Reuam Trot in various forms of performance still maintained the essence which was taking advantage of being harmony as a tool to build unity of the people in the community through the Reuam Trot dancing in Thai Khmer Songkran Festival.
