Extra Curriculum Development on “Democratic Behaviors” for Senior High School Students

Abstract

The major aims of the research were to 1) develop an extra curriculum on “Democratic Behaviors” for junior high school students and 2) assess the results of curriculum implementation.  The research and development process was divided into four phases: 1) study of primary data, 2) curriculum development, 3) curriculum implementation, and 4) evaluation. The research instrument consisted of an interview form of democratic behaviors, 2) an extra curriculum on “Democratic Behaviors”, 3) a democratic assessment test, and an observation form and a questionnaire. The research samples were sixty two 10th grade students at Nong Ya Ma Municipality School (Roi-et Town Sports School) in the second semester of 2019. The research statistics used were percentage, mean and standard deviation.  Results of the research were as follows: 1. The study showed that the major components of the extra curriculum consisted of introduction and importance, vision, principles,  core competencies of students, desirable characteristics, student quality, and course objectives. The contents were divided into three units: 1) 6 hours of good citizenship based on democratic principles, 2) 7 hours of social problems, and 3) 7 hours of democratic society. The learning activities were designed into three steps: 1) preparation, 2) practice, and 3) reflection. The learning activities took totally twenty hours focusing on three democratic behaviors: 1) participation, 2) respectful behaviors, and 5) responsibilities. The average appropriateness of the extra curriculum assessed by five experts was at a high level.  2. The research results were as follows after curriculum implementation.  2.1 The mean score of the students for the knowledge of democracy was 75.89% of good citizenship based on the democratic principles, 78.47% of social problems, and 80.65% of democratic society. 2.2 The findings revealed that the average democratic behavior of the students regarding the good citizenship based on the democratic principles, social problems and democratic society was at a moderate level (69.09%). The average democratic behavior of the students regarding the social problems was at a high level (82.80%). The average democratic behavior of the students regarding the democratic society was at a high level (99.46%). The research findings indicated that the average democratic behavior of the students was at a high level.  The average opinion of the teachers on the students’ democratic behaviors regarding  the good citizenship based on the democratic principles was 1.70, S.D = .43 (85.21%). The average opinion of the teachers on the students’ democratic behaviors regarding the social problems was 1.80, S.D = .37 (90.05%). The average opinion of the teachers on the students’ democratic behaviors regarding the democratic society was 1.90, S.D = .26 (95.83%). 2.3 The overall satisfaction of the students with the extra curriculum on “Democratic Behaviors” was at a very high level (4.55).
