Factors Affecting Substance Abuse Risk Behaviors of Undergraduate Students at One of the Universities in the Three Southern Border Provinces

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to study the substance abuse risk behavior and factors affecting substance abuse risk behaviors of undergraduate students at one of the universities in the three southern border provinces. The sample group in the research was 381 bachelor's degree students. The sample group was randomly taken using Proportional Stratified Sampling. The research tool was a questionnaire. Data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, and multiple regression.


The results of the study revealed that their risk behaviors for substance abuse were at low level. The influencing variables that able to predict substance abuse risk behaviors were family factors (β = - 0.209), peer group factors (β = - 0.484) and community factors (β = - 0.105). All of which could together predict substance abuse risk behaviors by 48.0 percent (Adjust R' = .480). From this study it was found that the peer group factor is an important factor and has a good effect on reducing the incidence of risk behaviors.  Therefore, the awareness on how to select friend should be promoted among the students. As well as other skills such as life skills and refusal skills, because there is a large epidemic of substance abuse in the society nowadays.
