Abstract

Charitable organizations play a crucial role in solving social problems nowadays. But they often face operational problems which can lead to unsustainability if they are unable to reduce financial risk and adjust their operational approaches corresponding to problems faced by their target recipients. This research aimed at investigating the diversification of activities and participation of beneficiaries who receive social support, which reflect the adjustment in the operation of this type of organizations. The study was conducted based on the case study approach in which a charitable organization in the south-most border area was selected purposively. Data collection was conducted mainly by means of participant observation. Typological analysis, data synthesis and logical reasoning were employed in the data analysis. Findings showed that the selected charitable organization had created and adjusted various activities. They are mainly social business activities that could generate income to be used for doing social work.  Moreover, opportunities were given to family members of the social beneficiaries to participate in these activities. They might participate as officers who were paid, or as volunteers who could be called to join voluntary activities occasionally. This approach of organizational operation should help in reducing financial risk, providing opportunities for target groups to earn income to support their livelihoods, and enhancing the organizational to be able to adjust its operation toward sustainability.
