Lessons Learnt from the SEARs Project

Abstract
One fo the largest recent innovations in Thailand has been the SEARs (Student English Access Rooms) project to set up effective self-access centers in 80 schools throughout Thailand. With World Bank funding, materials were supplied to the schools and teachers received training. While some of the SEARs can be unequivocally judged as effective, other have ed to more strife within the school than learning by students. This paper examines the factors which led to such different results and how the problems were dealt with. Guidelines for how to effectively implement innovations at secondary level are suggested.
