Abstract

The Happiness of Kati by Ngampan Vejjajiva, a SEAWRITE award winning Thai novel of 2006, has been translated into 5 languages. The translations have not been an easy task due to the fact that culture is one of the most challenging elements to translate. In trying to capture all the contents, the translator is faced with the “equivalent effects” that need to be evoked in the readers’ mind. Besides the translator’s linguistic competence, the semantic notion of “scenes and frames” is undeniably an important tool in achieving a thorough and effective translation. This research “In Pursuit of Thainess in the English Translation of The Happiness of Kati” delves to find the translator’s different methods of translating cultural elements from Thai into English and to explore whether all aspects of Thainess as presented in the original Thai version are all-encompassing, from the environs, architecture, and way of life to ways of thinking.
