Abstract

This study examines youth culture among the football fans of Muangthong Nongjorg United Football Club. The concept of ‘field’ by Pierre Bourdieu and frameworks under the sociology of sport are employed to study the emergence and maintenance of football fanclub occurring in and out of football stadium. The study shows that sport is one of the popular fields in contemporary culture which youth choose to involve and build up their social networks amidst a variety of social backgrounds. As members of a football fanclub, youth have come together to develop cultural, symbolic, and social capital that represent their collective identity as well as to strengthen their status in comparison with other football fanclubs. This can be observed from the practices of social networks, the employment of cyber technology, the creation of localism ideology, the social control of cheer behaviors, and the social construction of collective consciousness through songs, sport and non-sport related activities, and sharing among members the souvenirs and products made with a club’s logo. The study argues that the ‘field’ of youth culture among the football fanclub is not limited within the physical field of a football stadium. Rather, by looking at their ‘habitus’ and the way in which they accumulate their cultural and social that we can understand the broader landscape of ‘field’ actively performed and contested in daily lives of contemporary youth culture.
