Abstract
Although it is widely held that the political thought of Buddhadasa is against liberal democracy, there is still a few work demonstrating how Buddhadasa promotes the politics with the King as Head of State and the ideology of the Thai state – nation, religion, King – in particular. Some work may show how Buddhadasa's political thought is against liberal democracy, but they did not show what the best political regime for contemporary Thai politics in particular is. This essay is a little attempt to do so. The main argument is that Buddhadasa justifies the ideology of the Thai state and refuses Western democracy radically by employing a social contract theory and the Thainess argument. On the one hand, Buddhadasa admires the Thai monarchy, on the other he attacks politicians and a parliamentary system. Ideally, Buddhadasa would prefer all humans and Thai people in particular to be governed by monarchy. Practically, he sees that the best political regime for contemporary Thai politics is the Thai-style politics with the King as Head of State.
