Participative Measures of Garbage Collectors for Environmental Quality Promotion and Conservation : A Case Study of Surat Thani Province

Abstract

This research article aims to study the participative measures of garbage collectors for the environmental quality promotion and conservation in Surat Thani province. Due to Surat Thani Municipality’s landfill method of waste disposal, many people earn their living by collecting garbage for selling. According to the study of their quality of life, they are poor and homeless. The participation of those who collect and sell garbage is an effective mechanism for reducing the amount of waste. Recyclable materials can be beneficial. It relieves the burden of officials in waste management and promotes and conserves the environmental quality pursuant to the Enhancement and Conservation of National Environmental Quality Act, B.E. 2561 (2018).

The study found that the occupation of collecting garbage for selling was a valuable job but was ignored in society. However, the garbage collectors were underdeveloped, had poor quality of life, lacked security guarantee and did not secure any government welfare. Due to their poverty, they failed to access to the educational opportunities. Therefore, solving these problems needs a comprehensive solution.

This article suggests that the relevant agencies should provide hygienic housing and career promotion as well as offering occupational facilities, educating them in the safety procedure. Additionally, Surat Thani Municipality should actively campaign to separate waste before disposing to ensure people realize the benefits of waste separation on the community environment.
