Measures to Promote Crime Prevention in Ko Tao Area, Ko Phangan District, Surat Thani Province for Sustainable

Abstract

This research article aims to study the problems and difficulties in promotion of crime prevention in order to draw up guidelines and suggest the promotion of crime prevention procedures in Ko Tao area for sustainable tourism. As Ko Tao is the famous tourist attraction where draws million tourists each year, the safety problem becomes major cause tarnishing the image of tourism. According to the problem, it indicates that the present crime prevention measures are ineffective.

The author found that the island’s steep area and dense forest became a crime prone area. Local people did not cooperate in the crime prevention. Police surveillance could not cover the whole area. Prevention of recidivism lacked skilled performer and probation procedures. The publicity was deficient for reducing the probability of being a crime victim. The active actions were short for law enforcement and surveillance of those who were more likely to commit crimes regularly. There were not enough officers present. To develop and improve officers, it is crucial to broaden their skills and increase police manpower in the operation as well as integration between agencies in the crime prevention.  

The author suggests the guidelines for crime prevention as follows. Local people and tourists should recognize how to protect themselves. Ko Tao Sub-District Municipality cooperates with the government agencies, private sector and public to develop the area and environment. Ko Tao Provincial Police Station must recruit more manpower to suit the area and ensure the effective law enforcement. Likewise, relevant agencies must apply this guideline in their strategic framework for crime prevention.
