Abstract
The objective of the independent study was to study the role of musical instruments in the Karen people's traditions, Ban San Muang, Ban Chan, Kalayaniwattana, Chiang Mai. Data were collected from field interviews with the music expert living in the Ban San Muang, Ban Chan, Kalayaniwattana, Chiang Mai. The scope of the study was five musical instruments.
The findings showed that the musical instruments were used in ritual traditions namely wedding, funeral, plowing ceremony and New Year tradition. This indicated the uniqueness of the ethnic groups and beliefs of the Karen people living in Ban San Muang, Ban Chan, Kalayaniwattana, Chiang Mai. In addition, it found that there were two roles namely the role of belief and the role of identity and history.
