Roles and Status of Main Characters in Buppesannivas and Phromlikhit by Rompaeng

Abstract

This research article aims to analyze status and roles of main characters appeared in the novel “Buppesannivas” and “Phromlikhit” by Rompaeng. The study was conducted by studying status and roles of  4 main characters; including 2 male characters: Muen Sunthon Thewa and Muen Maha Rit, and 2 female characters: Ketsurang and Pudtan. The study found that the main characters possess 3 status: birth status, family status, and social status. These status’s differences can be classified clearly. Furthermore, Rompaeng presented the status and roles of these characters in Thai tradition’s way. To clarify, the male characters represent manliness which include personality, habit, knowledge, and social status, while female characters represent ladyness, mannerism, household work, and the skill of dealing with any situation. It can clearly be seen that Rompaeng equally present both male and female characters through her novels appropriately.
