Critical Discourse Analysis : A Case Study of Violence in the Three Southern Border Provinces

Abstract

The objective of this research article was to analyze the discourse of violence in the three southern border provinces that appeared in Isara newspaper during the years 2021 – 2022 through the verbal structure of the sentence by focusing on the analysis of the appearance of the subject and through nonverbal language, emphasizing the analysis of news images and relying on interpretations and explanations related to social and cultural contexts. The results of the research revealed that the use of language to convey violence can be classified into 3 types as follows: The subject of the sentence, the omission of the subject and the use of visual language. The subject of the sentence represented an attempt to resolve conflicts with government officials. It was suggested that government officials were heroes and terrorists would use the term to directly refer to terrorist movements and using language that creates stereotypes, such as southern terrorist. The victims of terrorists were often non-Islam people such as Thai Buddhists. This showed the religious conflict between terrorist movements, mostly Islam and other religions in the area, which had long been deeply rooted and difficult to resolve.
