The Invectives in Phayao Dialect Speakers: A Study of Meaning and Worldview

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to study the meanings and the worldviews of the invectives spoken in Phayao dialect. The collected data were from the local Phayao people in Dokkhamtai District, Phayao. The results showed that the meanings of the invectives spoken by local Phayao people in Dokkhamtai could be divided into 2 categories: First group was the invectives that gave literal meaning according to the local Phayao dialect’s structure of a sentence or phrases and the second was non- literal or connotative meaning. Literal meaning of invectives about physical appearance of a person, second, the invectives on personal behaviors and the last was the invectives of personal ignorance or idiot. Regarding to connotative meanings of invectives, the invective about physical appearance of a person, the invectives on personal behaviors, the invectives of personal ignorance or idiot were also found as mentioned in the literal meaning of the invectives of Phayao dialect, In terms of worldviews relating to the invectives of Phayao dialect, all 5 worldviews were found, They were; the worldview of parents and ancestors, the worldview of Intellectual, the worldview of sex, the worldview of animism and death, and the worldview of occupation and work.
