Doctoral Music Composition: “Wuhan”, The Legend of Mankind Victory for Contemporary Jazz Ensemble

Abstract

The Doctoral Music Composition: "Wuhan" - The Legend of Mankind's Victory for Contemporary Jazz Ensemble is written with the aim of creating a novel composition, which interprets the situation of the 2019 coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak in Thailand. The research methods were the narrative of various stages of the Covid-19 outbreak in Thailand is interpreted and creatively turned into a composition with a unique melody, vibrant rhythm, and emotional conveyance in the form of contemporary jazz music. The fusion of jazz, classical music, and contemporary music ideas is used, including the use of various composition techniques and the quotation, and decoding of the songs, such as the song " Chang" representing Thailand and the song " Toranee Gunsang " representing sadness.

The research results found this composition has a total length of about 40 minutes, consisting of 5 compositions, namely, Composition 1 "The Attack: BKK 3/26/2020" representing the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak in Thailand; Composition 2 "The Chaos" representing people's panic; Composition 3 "The Sacrificing" representing the sacrifices and losses that occurred; Composition 4 "Time of the Black Shadow" reflecting the darkness of the country from the widespread outbreak of Covid-19; and Composition 5 "Rising of the Heroes" representing resilience, struggle, and ultimately, overcoming the situation. The presentation of the composition has successfully met the defined objectives. It is an academic work in the field of song composition that integrates musical knowledge with real stories happening in the present, creating contemporary jazz compositions. It benefits composition studies and helps to develop Thailand's music academia further.
