“Winyan tee thuk nerathet”: Nostalgia and Memory in Wimol Sainimnul’s Literature

Abstract

These objectives of this study were to study the nostalgia and memory presenting strategies, and to analyze the personality of the characters who were a nostalgia in “Winyan tee thuk nerathet” of Wimol Sainimnul's literature. The theory of the nostalgia and memory was adapted for this study. According to the studying of this literature, the strategies of the nostalgia and memory presentation can be categorized into four types: place, time/season, nature, way of life and cultural. The result showed that making the memory fulfilled the characters' happiness as individuals who must live unhappy lives. The personality of the characters who were a nostalgia was shown by the reproduction of sadness caused by social alienation in a foreign society, which is an emerging trend. The presentation can be categorized into six types: leaving one's hometown, feelings of alienation from the new society, nostalgia for the past in the society from which one came, returning to one's hometown, feelings of alienation from the changing hometown society, and longing for the past before change.
