Move Analysis and Cohesion in Research Introduction Section of Thai Language Field Articles

Abstract
This article aimed to study the rhetorical moves and cohesion in the introductions of research articles in the field of Thai language. This research was qualitative research. The data used for analysis consisted of the introductions of 60 research articles in the field of Thai language, published in Tier 1 TCI (Thai Journal Citation Index Centre) journals between 2021-2023, selected through simple random sampling. The statistical methods used for data analysis included frequency counts and percentage calculations.
The findings revealed three rhetorical moves in research article introductions: (1) Introducing the research topic—including topic generalization, referring to relevant concepts, presenting observations or examples, highlighting the significance or interest of the topic, addressing the importance of the data sources or study area, and reviewing previous research; (2) Indicating the necessity of the study—indicating a gap and providing a rationale. (3) Announcing the present research—stating the research topic, objectives/ hypotheses/research questions, concepts or theories used, scope of the study, research applications, and the structure of the article. These moves were connected using three main cohesion strategies: the use of conjunctions, references, and lexical cohesion. Additionally, the cohesion found within each step contributed to a coherent overall structure throughout the introduction, from the initial to the final stage.
