Metaphors of Poverty in Chinese Films and Series
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to examine the conceptual metaphors that represent poverty in Chinese films and series, using the analytical framework of cognitive semantics. The research analyzes metaphorical expressions found in Thai subtitle translations of ten films and five series that are available on online platforms. The focus is on how linguistic choices in dialogues and narrative descriptions reveal the ways in which poverty is conceptualized and culturally interpreted within contemporary Chinese society. The findings show ten major categories of metaphors related to poverty: metaphors of competition, burden and low-status, humiliation, impurity and immorality, place, lack of support or resource scarcity, object, occupation, non-human, and human. These metaphorical patterns reflect the social realities faced by many people in China, ranging from economic pressure in urban centers to persistent inequalities between cities and rural areas. The metaphors found in the data also illustrate how poverty in Chinese media is framed both as a personal struggle and as a structural problem shaped by rapid economic development. Characters who experience poverty are often portrayed as burdened, limited in opportunity, or pushed to the margins of society. Such portrayals mirror broader public concerns about social mobility, competition in education and employment, and the widening gap between the wealthy and the poor. The study identifies two types of conceptual mappings. The first is ontological mapping, in which physical objects, locations, or observable phenomena are used to represent poverty. The second is epistemic mapping, in which cultural beliefs, social values, and shared knowledge guide how poverty is described and understood. These metaphors function not only as linguistic devices but also as cognitive tools that reveal how Chinese media construct social meanings related to economic hardship. The findings therefore contribute to a deeper understanding of how contemporary Chinese films and series shape public perceptions of poverty through metaphorical language embedded in narrative and visual storytelling.
