กิจกรรมนอกหลักสูตรเป็นกิจกรรมที่ปรากฏอยู่ในระบบโรงเรียนทุกระดับซึ่งอยู่นอกกรอบของหลักสูตรปกติ หรือหลักสูตรหลักของโรงเรียน กิจกรรมนอกหลักสูตรประกอบด้วยกิจกรรมหลายประเภท เช่น การโต้วาที ดนตรี กีฬา การละคร สภานักเรียน ชมรมต่าง ๆ การแข่งขัน ฯลฯ ดำเนินการโดยผู้เรียนภายใต้การสนับสนุนของครูโดยปกติเป็นกิจกรรมอาสาสมัครไม่ใช่มาจากการบังคับ กิจกรรมนอกหลักสูตรมีหน้าที่สำคัญในการเสริมการเรียนรู้ การเพิ่มเติมการเรียนรู้ในหลักสูตรหลักหรือหลักสูตรปกติ การบูรณาการความรู้ และการเสริมสร้างบ่มเพาะความเป็นประชาธิปไตยให้กับผู้เรียน กิจกรรมนอกหลักสูตรมีบทบาทที่สำคัญต่อการพัฒนาคุณภาพของผู้เรียนคู่ขนานไปกับหลักสูตรหลักหรือหลักสูตรปกติของโรงเรียน
