LANNA BRONZE BUDDHA IMAGE IN PHRAE SCHOOL

Abstract

This research aims to study a style, an evolution for date Bronze Buddha Images in Phrae School. The data were collected by surveying Bronze Buddha Images in Amphoe Muang Phrae, Amphoe Sung Men, Amphoe Long in Phrae Province and Amphoe Wiang Sa, Amphoe Tha Wang Pha, Nan Province. Then, the data were analysed for search characteristics, evolution and age evidences. The result of the study showed that those Bronze Buddha Images have characteristics, not the same as other Buddha Image Schools in Northern Thailand, such as curving eyebrows, two centipede outer robe or a shawl has long until paunch, All Buddha Images are in the posture of subduing demon (Maravijaya) with Virasana, right arm is more outstretched than other Schools. That characteristics showed that Bronze Buddha Image in Phrae Schools was developed from Sukhodaya Style because the Buddha Images in Sukhodaya Style are appear in Museum of Wat Sri Don Kham, Amphoe Long, and Bronze Buddha Image at Wat Mai Burma has some characteristics similar to Buddha Image in Sukhodaya Style. After that, the Bronza Buddha Images in Phrae School are developed. There were built between late 15th century A.D. to late 16th century A.D. and ended when the Lan Na Kingdom fell and combined with Burma.
