Cost Analysis of Open and Laparoscopic Surgery for Cryptorchidism in Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to analyze and compare the costs of open and
laparoscopic surgery for Cryptorchidism in Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai hospital. This study
aimed at male patients with age under 15 years old who were diagnosed to be one side
Cryptorchidism between October 2015 and September 2016. The data were collected by chart
record form, relating to labor costs material costs and capital costs and were analyzed by
descriptive statistics.
The results showed that costs of open and laparoscopic surgery for Cryptorchidism
was 22,969.97 baht and 25,003.39 baht, respectively. Total costs per one patient of
laparoscopic surgery were higher than open surgery, approximately 8%. Especially, material costs
of laparoscopic surgery were higher since this method needed to use complicated and high
price tools and equipment, as well as skillful physicians. Nevertheless, laparoscopic surgery
gave more advantages than open surgery. Thus, National Health Security Office (NHSO) should
promote to serve people laparoscopic surgery. At the same time, the government should
support budgets for training physicians to be more skill for laparoscopic surgery.
