VARIABLES DISCRIMINATING LEADERSHIP OF STUDENTS IN PRIVATE HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS IN THE NORTHEAST OF THAILAND

This study aims to 1) study the leadership level of students in private higher education institutions and 2) discriminate variables affecting leadership level of students in private higher education institutions in the Northeast of Thailand. The research samples were 135 students studying in 9 educational institutions in the Academic Year 2016. The samples were classified into three groups with 45 students in each group. The first group consisted of the chairpersons of student organizations or student unions. The second group consisted of chairpersons of student in different fields of study, and the last group consisted of normal students. Research instruments were 1) the close-ended questionnaire, 2) students’ motivation test, 3) students’ achievement motivation test, and 4) the questionnaire. Statistical methods used for data analysis were mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, one-way MANOVA and discriminant analysis. The results of the study showed regarding 8 variables, it was found that parents’ economic status was at the medium level. In relation to parent’s leadership, it was found that 17 percent of parents used to be leaders. Students’ high school academic achievement was in a good level. 16 percent of students used to be leaders at high school level. Students’ learning motivation and achievement motivation was at a high level. It was found from the study was at a moderate level. Students’ inspiration was at a high level. Those variables were parents’ economic status, students’ high school academic achievement, students’ leader experience during studying in high school and students’ inspiration.
