This research had two aims: 1) To investigate the mistaken behaviors and their causes of children and youths in juvenile detention centers for boys; and 2) To examine their career needs. A mixed-methods research methodology was employed in obtaining the field data, including a questionnaire which was distributed to 249 children and youths in juvenile vocational training centers for boys. For the case study, 20 life-mistaken children and youths were interviewed. The quantitative data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation, while a content analysis was used for the interview data.
The findings revealed that the causes for their mistaken behaviors were a lack of life skills and life understanding, family problems, having bad friends and problems in economic conditions, being immature, inconsiderate, aimless in their life, pessimistic, surrounded by a bad environment and having consumed media containing violence. Nevertheless, they had high career needs. It was recommended to prepare them with the professional training which matched their skills and interests, as well as to increase the proportion of life skills courses to be equal to professional training courses. It was suggested that the Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection coordinate information and to define its roles that are connected to 1) the Office of Vocational Education, 2) the Office of Non-Formal and Informal Education, and 3) the Department of Mental Health.
