Abstract

Because the uniqueness of Nora performance, a Thai ethnic dance, represents a culturally intangible heritage of humankind, this research was aimed at examining student competence in Nora, investigating the factors influencing competence in Nora, studying the relationship between performance-enhancing factors and competence in Nora, exploring the students’ background that could affect competence in Nora, and presenting the recommendations for developing and promoting Nora performance. Stratified random sampling was applied to select a total of 348 first-year students of Songkhla Rajabhat University, and. 16 key informants were included in the in-depth interview with a purposive sampling technique. A questionnaire with an internal consistency coefficient of .82 was administered to collect the data from an online platform. A structured interview which had been reviewed by a group of experts was conducted in person. Descriptive and inferential statistics, such as mean, standard deviation, and correlation coefficient were employed to perform the data analysis. A content analysis was also undertaken. The results showed competence in Nora was the factor that had the strongest effects on Nora performance among the factors incorporated in the model. The factor that had a moderate effect was students’ environment. In addition, economic factor and competence in Nora were strongly related. The students of Nora descent demonstrated an outstanding competence in Nora. It was implied that Nora should be developed through education, continuation, and strengthening its legacy. Nora performance was highly recommended to be promoted through events, publicity, awards and contests nationally and internationally.
