A STUDY OF GRADE 5 STUDENTS' CRITICAL READING ABILITY USING SQ5R METHOD VIA STEM EDUCATION CONCEPT READING CHAPTER

The purposes of this experimental research were to 1) compare grade 5 students’ critical reading ability before and after using SQ5R method in the chapter of STEM education concept, and 2) compare the posttest score to the designated criterion of 70 percent. using cluster random sampling. The participants comprised 23 students who were studying in grade 5/1 of the Demonstration School of Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University situated in Muang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, in the second semester of academic year 2020. The group of students was randomized by cluster random sampling. The research instruments were 5 lesson plans using SQ5R method in the chapter of STEM education concept, and a form of critical reading ability measurement, data were collected with pre- and post-tests. Statistical techniques used for data analysis in this study were mean, percentage, standard deviation, and the t- test. The result of the study revealed that 1) critical reading ability of grade 5 students after the experiment, using SQ5R method in the chapter of STEM education concept, was significantly higher than before the experiment at the 0.05 level, and 2) the posttest score of grade 5 students after the experiment was not significantly higher than the designated criterion of 70 percent at the 0.05 level.
