Abstract

The two major objectives of this review article were: 1) to study the application of the specific characteristics of grounded theory in conducting this qualitative research strategy in Thailand; 2) to evaluate the progression and development of the grounded theory research conducted in Thailand during the past 10 years (2013-2022). To answer the first objective of the study, a review of literature related to the grounded theory research was conducted. It was founded that the grounded theory research could be classified into four groups: Original Grounded Theory; Glaserian Grounded Theory; Straussian Grounded Theory and Constructivist Grounded Theory. In addition, there are five specific characteristics that are required to be performed in the process of data analysis in addition to the normal procedures in conducting the grounded theory research. At the same time, in order to answer the second objective of the study, a study of 20 grounded theory research articles conducted in Thailand during the past 10 years that were published in various journals in Thai citation index was performed and compared with the five specific characteristics of the grounded theory research. It was founded that most of the grounded theory research study conducted in Thailand did not comply with the specific characteristic requirements of the grounded theory research. A discussion of findings was made and recommendations were proposed for those researchers who plan to conduct the grounded theory research study in the future.
