Equivalence in translating the words ទៅ /tɨv/ ‘go’ and មក /mɔɔk/ ‘come’ in Khmer into Thai

Abstract
This article aims to study the equivalence in translating modern Khmer words ទៅ /tɨv/ ‘go’ and មក /mɔɔk/ ‘come’ into Thai. The data was collected from two Khmer novels published in 1938 and 2006 and their Thai translations. It is found that the translations of these two words can be categorized into 3 groups: 1) they can be equivalently translated into Thai as /pay/ ‘go’ and /maa/ ‘come’; 2) they can be translated as /pay/ ‘go’ and /maa/ ‘come’ in Thai but the translated sentence must be partly altered; and 3) they cannot be translated as /pay/ ‘go’ and /maa/ ‘come’ in Thai. Three factors responsible for the cases in which ទៅ /tɨv/ ‘go’ and មក /mɔɔk/ ‘come’ can be translated as /pay/ ‘go’ and /maa/ ‘come’ in Thai include: 1) the Subject-Verb-Object word order in Khmer and Thai; 2) the status of Khmer and Thai as isolating languages; and 3) the serial verb construction in Khmer and Thai. As for the cases in which ទៅ /tɨv/ ‘go’ and មក /mɔɔk/ ‘come’ cannot be translated as /pay/ ‘go’ and /maa/ ‘come’ in Thai, the significant factor concerns the process of grammaticalization in Khmer and Thai languages.
