Wicked Love?: The Romanticized Representation of Toxic Masculinity in Mafia Romance Novels

Abstract
The article’s purpose is to examine how toxic masculinity is romanticized through representations of the mafia protagonists in five Thai romance novels: Saneha Mafia (Enamored of Mafia), Than Rak Mafia (My Mafia’s Love Punishment), Taas Sawaat Chom Mafia (Mafia King’s Sex Slave), Phai Rak Samee Mafia (Surrender to My Mafia’s Husband Love), and Mafia Bongkarn Rak (My Mafia’s Love Command). It further explores the literary composition that aligns with romance-novel conventions and the sociocultural context underlying these representations. The study shows that these texts portray the mafia figure in three principal ways: as a person who views women as property, who experiences love for the first time, and who unleashes sexual desire. These depictions are constructed through various literary techniques: plot structure, characterization, and narrative perspective. They also intersect with four key sociocultural factors: the mafia myth in literature and popular culture, patriarchy within a capitalist society, rape culture through literature and popular media, and women’s culture of reading romance novels. Consequently, toxic masculinity is presented in a romantic tradition that aligns with the conventions of the romance genre. Moreover, its fluid adaption to fit middle-class family norms makes it easier for readers in patriarchy to be persuaded and accept these portrayals.
