Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha: a Literary Criticism

Abstract

          Siddhārtha is written by Hermann Hesse in 1919-1922 A.D. and has been published in many languages. Siddhārtha is Philosophical literature that the poet wants to present Indian philosophies by creating a New philosophical framework in Western concepts. The History of Lord Buddha is used as a role model in this literature. Thus, this article aims to research whether Siddhārtha follows a model of the history of Lord Buddha, or not. And can this literature create a New philosophical framework?  Research results are that Siddhārtha follows The History of Lord Buddha, especially on the part of the protagonist. But in part of philosophy, the literature is only the original philosophy in the new language, and can’t create a new philosophical framework in Western concepts.
