A Comparative Study of Undergraduate Music Therapy Curricula in Selected Countries

Abstract

     The objective of this research study was to compare the music therapy programs at undergraduate level in four international universities investigating four categories including the name of degree, the length of study in the programs, subjects offering, and proportion of subjects. The selected universities were University of Kansas and University of Miami from the United States of America, Wilfrid Laurier University from Canada, and Kunitachi College of Music from Japan. The content analysis was employed as research methodology. The result showed that there were three degree titles offered at undergraduate level in music therapy programs, namely Bachelor of Music Education with Major in Music Therapy, Bachelor of Music Therapy, and Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy. The length of the study was from four years to four and a half years. The subject contents were rather similar and divided into three categories; general education subjects, music subjects, and music therapy subjects. The music subjects were offered most among four universities. The key content in music therapy subjects consisted of three groups: (1) Music Therapy Academic Subjects, for example, Introduction to Music Therapy, Principles of Music Therapy, Theory and Methodology of Music Therapy, Functional Techniques in music therapy, Influence of Music Behavior, Introduction to Dance/Movement Therapy, Managing Behavior in Music Environment, Music in Psychotherapy, Music in Rehabilitation, Music Therapy for Handicapped Children/Persons, Music Therapy in Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine, Music Therapy in Elderly and Palliative Care, and Music Therapy Theory and Research, (2) Music Therapy Skills Subjects, for example, Group Leadership Skills in Music Therapy, Clinical Improvisation, Clinical Techniques for Adults, and Clinical Techniques for Children, and (3) Music Therapy Practicum Subjects, for example, Music Therapy Internship and Music Therapy Practicum.
