Abstract

This research paper aimed to study the story of Empress Wu Zetian in the earliest record, “Jiu Tangshu” (旧唐书), the writing of Chinese history in the Five Dynasties and Ten States Period using the historical method. “Jiu Tangshu” (旧唐书) was mainly analysed. The results revealed that the record of Empress Wu Zetian in “Jiu Tangshu” was divided into two parts. The first part included the stories during the period of being the Empress. The stories in this period were mostly recorded (78%), comprising the following topics: (1) appointment or punishment of nobles (31 %), (2) changes of the name of the era and the royal pardon (26%), (3) creation and organization of various religious offerings at the Mingtang Hall (明堂) (12%), and (4) disasters and disaster relief orders (9%). The second part included the stories before Empress Wu Zetian’s enthronement (22%), consisting of the following topics: (1) the sons of Wu Zetian (9%), (2) entering the court as a concubine and being the Empress Dowager (8%), and (3) seizure of political power as the royal millennium (皇太后) (5%). Both positive and negative contents were recorded.
