Abstract

This article aimed at studying the characteristics of Khunsangkhan from Lanna and Kengtung and finding the relationship between Lanna and Kengtung from his characteristics in Songkran festival. Research methods used ancient document such as palm leaf manuscripts and Khoi paper books, including the data from the fieldtrip in Kengtung, Myanmar. The collected Khunsangkhan data were analyzed and compared in order to find the relationship between Lanna and Kengtung. The results showed that the distinctive characteristics of Khunsangkhan in Lanna blended the primary beliefs of ghost and Buddhism showing the relationship between human and supernatural power. This was a sign of time travel from past to future (present year to new year) and also the sign of forecasting set in Northern new year book or Songkran declaration and calendar card. Regarding the characteristics of Khunsangkhan in Kengtung, it was found that it was a sign of fertility and rain-making rites. This sign was abstract with cultural power and also showed the transfer from old year to new year. It was a cultural landscape of Kengtung. Concerning the relationship between Lanna and Kengtung through Khunsangkhan in Songkran festival, it was found that Khunsangkhan was the same sign of moving from the old year to the new year in both Lanna and Kengtung.
